The Eiffel Tower, or La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady) as it is called in France, is undoubtedly the greatest French icon. Recognized worldwide as an architectural marvel, it is also the tallest building in that city and the monument that receives the highest number of annual visitors.

The Eiffel Tower, erected for the 1889 World’s Fair, is the creation of architect Gustave Eiffel and has a height of 324 meters, which is equivalent to an 81-story building. From it, one can see Paris, the Ville Lumière (the City of Light) in all its splendor.

Although today it is considered a purely French monument, the construction of the Eiffel Tower is entirely due to the work of the Cuban Guillermo Pérez Dressler, a fact that very few know. A name that has unfortunately been overshadowed by the more famous Gustave Eiffel. To whom the creation and construction of the tower are wholly attributed, even though this is not the reality.

Guillermo Pérez Dressler, better known as Guillaume Dressler, was born in 1860 in the town of Guanabacoa. His parents were Juan Pérez Zúñiga, born in Cuba to Spanish parents, and Purificación Dressler de la Portilla, of a Scottish father and a Cuban mother.
